Die samestelling en aanwending van Suid-Afrikaanse voergraad-koring vir groeiende varke
The composition and use of South African feed-grade wheat for growing pigs. Studies were conducted to determine the composition of South African feed-grade wheat, to compare the nitrogen and energy digestibility with that of maize, and to determine if feed-grade wheat can successfully replace maize in a pig growth diet formulated to contain equal amounts of lysine and digestible energy (DE). The chemical composition of wheat samples collected throughout South Africa showed large variation, particularly in respect of protein content. The DE content of the wheat fed in the growth trial was 7,6% lower than the mean value reported in the literature. Pigs fed the wheat-based diet had live mass gains similar to pigs fed the maize-based diet, utilized their feed 3 - 6% less efficiently which, however, decreased to between 1 and 3% if expressed on a DE intake basis.
