APPLIED ANIMAL HUSBANDRY AND RURAL DEVELOPMENT

(A peer reviewed publication of the South African Society for Animal science)

GUIDELINES FOR AND SCOPE OF THE AAH&RD JOURNAL

Background

In addition to the South African Journal of Animal Science, SASAS also published an electronic journal on “popular scientific publications” under the name SA ANIM SCI, which was the name initially used for the newsletter of SASAS some years ago.

Both the name and term “popular scientific” created confusion and the Society replaced SA ANIM SCI in 2008 with the new journal “Applied Animal Husbandry and Rural Development”.  At the same time the Society did away with the “Anim Sci” label. Up to now, articles in this publication were not peer reviewed.

Due to its nature, many possible articles do not qualify for inclusion in SAJAS but it could be considered for this publication.  At the moment some of them are published in foreign peer reviewed journals.  Furthermore, there appears to be a gap in South Africa, since SAJAS does not necessarily cater for articles of a more applied nature or that focus mainly on livestock development or livestock production systems.

Peer Reviewed Journal

SASAS has decided to establish an additional peer reviewed journal, viz “Applied Animal Husbandry and Rural Development” (AAH&RD). The editor is Mr Charl Hunlun and the co-editor Dr Michiel Scholtz.  They will be supported by an Editorial Committee, which consist of Prof. Frans Swanepoel, Prof. Michael Chimonyo, Mr Hannes de Villiers, Mr Baldwin Nengovhela, Dr Florence Nherera, Mr Thinus Jonker and Mr Dan Motiang.

For the immediate future the journal will only be published electronically on the website of SASAS.

Elegibility

Articles from South Africa and Sub-Saharan Africa will be accepted for publication. Papers on research done on or in developing countries will also be accepted. It is trusted that this will lead to crosspollination of research ideas and accelerate the internationalization and the achievement of accreditation of the journal.

Scope of the Journal
