Institutional Membership of SASAS
Science is an important cornerstone of the livestock industry in South Africa. The services and products that the industry renders are based on research findings and outputs of scientists locally and abroad. Government only registers products such as medicines and feeds based on the scientific data placed before them. Animal Scientists are only allowed to consult if they are registered with the SA Council for Natural Scientific Professions (SACNASP). These categories of registration depend on their qualifications. No matter how we look at it, all levels of the industry are connected to science in one way or another.
The South African Society for Animal Science (SASAS) is a society with about 400 members that nurtures this science not only in Africa, but across the world. We have become a voice for the developing world, through our accredited scientific publication, the South African Journal of Animal Science (SAJAS), and the web-site www.sasas.co.za. This website is one of the few that provides free world-wide access to the science. In South Africa SASAS also provides expertise for the advisory body on animal science to the SA Council for Natural Scientific Professions(SACNASP) through the professional affairs committee.
In the execution of its goals, SASAS needs to liaise with Government and other relevant bodies to firmly establish the role and position of the animal scientist in the industry. It is necessary to expand the secretariat and strengthening our society to productively pursue building, strengthening and co-ordinating human capital growth.
I therefore invite your organisation to become part of the solution to sustained science through your membership to SASAS. Your commitment to science will be acknowledged as set out in the document “Benefits for Institutional members”.
