The South African Journal of Animal Science is an open access, peer-reviewed journal. The journal publishes reports of research dealing with the production of farmed animal species (cattle, sheep, goats, pigs, horses, poultry and ostriches), as well as pertinent aspects of research on companion animals and aquatic and wildlife species. All submitted articles are subjected to a single-blind peer review process that is managed by a section editor under the supervision of the editor-in-chief. Copyright of a published article resides with the authors. Such articles will be published as open access content and be covered by the terms of the Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 South African Licence. Users may copy, distribute, transmit and adapt the work, but must recognise the authors and the South African Journal of Animal Science.
Originally supported by the Agricultural Research Council (ARC), the South African Journal of Animal Science moved online in the early 2000s using a custom-built manuscript submission and editorial management system. In August 2025, the journal transitioned to the Public Knowledge Project’s Open Journal Systems (PKP OJS), hosted by Khulisa Journals at the Academy of Science of South Africa (ASSAf).
In line with international best practices, the journal integrates key components of digital research infrastructure, including DOIs (digital object identifiers), ORCID iDs (researcher identifiers), ROR IDs (research organisation identifiers), and CCLs (Creative Commons Licences), ensuring transparency, traceability, and global interoperability.
As of August 2025, the South African Journal of Animal Science makes use of the Crossref 10.17159 DOI prefix. View the journal metadata health and the Crossref DOI Conflict Report here.

Protein deposition in pigs as influenced by sex, type and livemass. 2. Estimation of the requirements of digestible ideal prote
Protein deposition rate was measured in 100 lean and obese pigs of both sexes (boars and gilts) fed ad lib. The intakes of digestible ideal protein (DIP) and deposition rates of body protein was used to calculate conversion ratios of…
Die verwantskap tussen liggamsmate en die groeitoetsresultate van Simmentalerbulle
The relationship between body measurements and growth test results of Simmentaler bulls. The relationship between body measurements and performance of 664 Simmentaler bulls was investigated. Phase C data from three departmental performance testing stations, namely Irene, Vryburg and Cedara, were…
Factors affecting reproduction in Merino ewes of the Tygerhoek flock
Factors affecting reproduction in Merino ewes were investigated using data of 7 917 matings of 2 258 ewes in the Tygerhoek flock during the lambing seasons of 1971 to 1984. The ewes were run in a selection trial to evaluate…
Performance of Pekin ducks subjected to qualitative feed restriction at various ages during the rearing period
Different diets low in lysine were fed to ducklings of various ages in three separate trials to investigate the effect of these diets on bodymass and subsequent reproductive performance. The results showed that when ducklings were fed a diet containing…
The influence of roughage on the digestibility of whole maize grain diets (Short communication)
Four rumen-cannulated steers were fed a diet consisting of whole maize grain, high protein concentrate and molasses. Two of the four animals received 10% ground Eragrostis curvula hay in addition to the whole maize grain diet. The feeding period was…
Effect of active immunization against androstenedione on reproductive performance of Angora ewes (Short communication)
The effect of active immunization against androstenedione on reproductive performance was investigated in a flock of 151 Angora ewes. Although differences occurred between groups in some of the reproductive parameters recorded, the eventual number of kids produced was virtually the…
Verhoudings tussen dele van die Merinovag en die invloed daarvan op inkomste (Kort mededeling)
Correlation between parts of the Merino fleece and the subsequent influence on income. The fleeces of 160 one· year old ewes were classed and separated according to the standards of the National Wool Growers' Association into 'fleece wool', BKS…
Die effek van insluitingspeil van Eragrostis curvula-hooi en sonneblomdoppe op melkproduksie en melksamestelling by eerstekalf-
The effect of inclusion rate of Eragrostis curvula hay and sunflower husks on milk production and milk composition of first-calf Friesland cows. The effect of different inclusion rates of Eragrostis curvula in complete diets on the milk production and milk…
Syagtigheid en elastisiteit as teeldoelstellings by karakoellamers (Kort mededeling)
Silkiness and elasticity as breeding aims in Karakul lambs. Descriptions of existing pelt characteristics for 1083 Karakul lambs were examined and general hair quality as well as the hair texture of the body and extremities was evaluated and grouped in…
Summer yield of fish in polyculture in Transkei, South Africa, using pig manure with and without formulated feed
A high density fish polyculture investigation was conducted during the summer season of 1984-1985 at the Umtata Dam Fish Research Centre, Transkei . Fish species used, included the cross-breed between the Israeli Dor 70 and the Aischgrund varieties of the…
Die bepaling van ’n tempokonstante vir die uitvloei van Cr-gemerkte proteïenpartikels uit die rumen van lakterende melkkoeie
The determination of a rate constant for the outflow of chromium-mordanted protein particles from the rumen of lactating dairy cattle. Lactating Friesian/Holstein cows were used for the determination of the outflow rate of protein particles from the rumen. Fishmeal was…
Effect of dietary molybdenum and sulphur on the copper status of hypercuprotic sheep after withdrawal of dietary copper
A trial was conducted to determine the efficacy of dietary molybdenum (Mo) and sulphur (S) in reducing liver copper (Cu) levels in sheep at risk of Cu toxicity. Sheep were fed 75 mg Cu/day during a preliminary period…
Fermentation characteristics and chemical composition of silage made from different ratios of cattle manure and maize residues
Fermentation characteristics and chemical composition of silage made from different ratios of cattle manure and maize residues were investigated. Manure (fresh) obtained from steers fed on a high concentrate diet was ensiled on a laboratory scale with maize…
The use of urea by lactating dairy cows when fed maize silage
Maize silage is relatively high in energy but low in protein for the normal lactational requirements of dairy cows. Three trials were conducted to compare the use of urea as opposed to natural protein supplements in balancing the…
Histological differences in the skin and fibre characteristics of ten white-woolled sheep breeds
Skin and wool samples of fully grown white-wool led rams of 10 different sheep breeds were investigated. An index was constructed according to which the breeds could be classified into three groups, taking 11 characteristics into…
Effect of level of supplementary feeding on mohair production and reproductive performance of Angora ewes grazing Atriplex nummu
Pregnant, adult Angora ewes, supplemented with either 0, 200, 400 or 600 9 of alkali-ionophore treated whole maize per ewe per day were kept on Atriplex nummularia pasture for the entire gestational period. Changes in live bodymass, reproductive…
A note on the phenotypic relationship between 18-month mating mass and average lifetime reproductive performance of Merino ewes
The relationship between 18-month mating mass and average lifetime conceptions/mating (Ec/Em), lambs born/conception (Lb/Ec), lambs born/mating(Lb/Em), preweaning mortalities/Iamb born (Ld/Lb) and lambs weaned/mating (Lw/Em) was investigated with data from 1222 Merino ewes available for at least…
Phenotypic correlations between wool traits of a Döhne Merino flock (Short communication)
Correlations between eight wool characteristics as well as bodymass were calculated for the Dohne Merino. Data originated from 320 ewes present in the development project on this breed at the Agricultural Research Station, Dohne.
The influence of age and generation number of the Döhne Merino on different wool production traits (Short communication)
Age had a significant (P ≤0,05) influence on greasy fleece mass and clean fleece mass. The staple length, fibre density and bodymas≤s were influenced highly significantly (P ≤5 0,01). Generation number had a significant (P ≤…
